1.) Not a lightweight

We purchased this set at a very critical time -- we were just about to move into a house and had a long list of things we wanted to do, including but not limited to: cut a hole in the basement door for a cat door, install curtain rods, dis-assemble and assemble furniture and closet organizers, install cabinet hardware on brand-new maple cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms, hang a medicine cabinet, etc. We've used these tools every day for almost two weeks and have only put the batteries on the chargers once -- not because we needed to, but because we thought we should.

We were concerned that they would not have enough power for our many needs. We've never had a problem with it not being able to handle any job asked of them.

The one recommendation I would make is to purchase a set of drill bits, as the bits it comes with are not enough for most jobs. Fortunately, it takes standard drill bits with ease.

Just because they are small and seem lightweight doesn't mean they aren't tough enough to tackle most household jobs (even the electrician borrowed our screwdriver for awhile). As a woman with small hands, the tools are very comfortable for me to use, but they are also comfortable for my husband, whose hands are pretty big.

2.) VPX Heaven!

IMHO, VPX is a revolution in tool design. I was so excited when I saw these tools. This system has what I consider to be the best industrial design you can find in the consumer tool market. I started with the inflator and since then I've bought and tested all the different components except for the USB/Inverter.

I find the tools to have plenty of power and its very useful to have a common battery as well as one thats ready to go when you need it! They also take a lot less space than my old tool system which my wife always thought took a lot of space. My VPX setup takes half the space and does more! This one is a keeper!

The new VPX system by Black and Decker has been initially quite impressive. It is light-weight, compact and yet relatively powerful. The battery is small but holds a reasonable capacity. The tools are compact and easy-to-use. Although time and use will tell the fuller story, my initial experiences have been very positive and I especially find the Cut Saw a very versatile tool around my model railroad project. I hope that I am still as happy with the system a year from now but the early indicators are quite positive

5.) A good and bad surprise.

First, I'm in my eighth decade and am experienced with tools.

This product concept, and its execution, create the most cost-effective set of lithium-battery tools on the market. The tools are excellent, the price is right, and so far everything seems both effective and indestructible despite hard usage.

The A123 batteries are incredible as to their power (current dumping), ability to store energy for long periods, and recharge times.

The bad news is that B&D somehow failed in the marketing department - and this extraordinary product has left most retailer shelves.

A store manager said that the VPX product line confused the consumer, who otherwise buys other lithium powered units at twice the price. If he's right, that's the last reason to discontinue the VPX line. In the U.S. market, the product that offers the most for the money should succeed. If that story is valid, in this case the product's failure has nothing to do with merit, or with benefit to the consumer. Rather, it's the benefit (profit) to the retailer that influenced the decision - and that's just plain wrong.

I have the whole suite of VPX tools with a few duplications, made significantly less costly due to promotional prices. However, I would consider these tools a bargain at their original MSRP.

No it doesn't have a clutch. and No it doesn't cost $300.00. But, It does have interchangeable batteries, and it does have an external charger. And it comes with a reasonable saw and great little light. And, Why didn't I think about linking the chargers together? It is a very cool light weight system that packs surprizing power and run time. It is never dead, when you pick it up. (You know the old ones you charge them before you use them and charge them when you store them and charge them before you use them and charge...) This system is nice for the average homeowner, its not for contractors or heavy use. I tested the screw driver by driving a 3" screw into a hard wood 2x4 it did ok on the 1st setting, second setting it stalled out, but that is to be expected with a 7 volt. I was actually surprised it better in my test than i expected. Since most people will not use it to drive 3"screws this system should do just fine. The screw drivers could use a clutch and a brake but then again your not paying a $150 for just a screw driver. The Saw is pretty handy as well, i used the same 2x4 and it did just ok, but when i used it on a laminate floor piece and 1/2 inch cedar fencing and it did really well. The flashlight works, its a 3 led and does what it should. I like this set because its comfortable to use and handy for for around the house. The cool thing about the set it the lithium ion batteries, Should work for most homeowners.

I saw the set on a Gold Box deal ($49.99) and couldn't pass it up, particularly since I had the VPX3101 AC/USB Powersource and no VPX battery or charger. The Gold box deal got me a charger and battery plus the saw, power screwdriver and flashlight for only a little more than the cost of the charger alone.

After charging the battery (easy to tell when charged as the LED on the charger stops flashing when charged), I tested the flashlight and screwdriver. The flashlight is a three LED design and seems bright for a handheld light. The LEDs give a cool, white light and the lights pivot so you can aim it down, straight ahead or anywhere in between. The wrist lanyard is a bungee with a friction clip that lets you hang it around things. Overall, first impression is good product.

The power screwdriver is a two speed unit with reverse. It doesn't have a regular chuck but rather a hex connection. It comes with standard and philips "bits" for the unit and you could probably find hex drill bits if you need to drill small holes. However, in my opinion the head speed is not really up to much drilling. The speed of the low setting looks good for driving screws and I plan to use mine for light work inside the house and at hobby shows for assembling modules. For the price, it exceeded my expectations.

I haven't had a chance to test the saw but by the size, it looks like it could cut off long bolts and things of that nature. It comes with two saw blades.

The basic set comes in a box with a handle which I found convenient. I think it will be useful for tasks such as assembing furniture or other items. If you need more substantial woodworking, I would recommend getting woodworking grade tools. For the price I paid, it seems to be a good household set and I recommed it for that level of usage.

19.) B&D's Next Generation of Toy Tools
Reviewed by: Cheap Scientist honolulu, HI, USA
Rating:
Years ago, I purchased a Black and Decker Versapak Tool kit, consisting of a drill, flashlight, jigsaw, sander, Nicad battery, charger and hard plastic case. It made a great toy tool set, but the batteries were notorious for either failing, or losing charge when you really needed them. Fast forward to 2007 and B&D introduces another toy tool kit, this time based on Lithium ion batteries. Why do I call this a toy set? Because other than the flashlight, nothing really qualifies as a tool any bona fide contractor would bring to a job, unless he liked using inexpensive tools that other people would steal. And then, the pain of losing such tools would be lessened. Not every tool in the VPX lineup is homeowner grade. The VPX1212 14.4-Volt Drill Driver is pro quality. But it costs nearly as much as this entire tool kit. Let's look at the kit's driver/drill first. This has two speeds, 195 and 625 rpm. The torque is adequate for driving 1/4" holes in wood, assuming you purchase a good hex-head shank drill bit set, such as the one made by Bosch. You cannot use regular drill bits unless you buy an adapter chuck with jaws. Such is progress. The new B&D driver/drill is a much better portable tool than the Versapak unit (which, to its credit, has a chuck), and much lighter too. You will not blitz through any drilling job, but the fact that the drill is battery powered means you can use it in more places than a corded drill. But for driving screws, I suggest you opt for the Bosch PS20-2 driver. This has a clutch and a more variable range of speeds. I can drive screws with either the Bosch or the B&D drill without stripping the screw head, but the finesse of the Bosch makes a world of difference in consistency. If the B&D is your only driver/drill, then pulse the switch when you use it as an electric screwdriver. There is at least a fraction of a turn overshoot, which takes some getting used to. One accessory I recommend for this drill is a Milwaukee 49-22-8510 Right Angle Drill Attachment Kit. When you are in tight quarters, you will appreciate the ergonomics of this attachment. Make sure you have short shank driver bits to take advantage of this combo. Next, I will cover the cut saw. This is not bad, but get a T-shank wood blade vs. the universal shank one that B&D supplies. As an accessory, the B&D wood blade makes no sense because the metal one they give you does have a T-shank. Some bean counter was hard at work trying to save 10 cents here. I'd estimate the throw of the saw is around 3/8 to 1/2", enough to cut most thin or soft materials, including 1/4" plywood, 1/2" drywall, or PVC. I would not use this saw to cut hardwood flooring, unless you really are cheap and cannot afford anything beyond this tool kit. But, cheap is ok, so long as you work slow and steady. The speed of this saw is actually conducive to free hand cutting without a guide. Kickback is low. The safety release on the saw is easy to work with, unlike the one on Makita's battery powered mini-circular saw. (That has to be one of the worst examples of industrial design I have ever had to contend with). Saws of any kind can be dangerous to use, but B&D gets points for making their saw a good bit safer to use, since you can hold the barrel with your non-trigger hand, and not have to use it to fiddle with the safety release. Plunge cutting with the saw is not something I would recommend to the average user, although it can be done. Drill a hole first, if you intend to do an interior cutout. There is something about a lightweight tool that worries me for this function. Anyway, you already have a drill to make the opening, so use it. Finally, we get to the flashlight. This is wonderful and efficient, being based on LEDs and not a filament bulb. It could save your life during an electrical outage, seriously. They say the cord is made of bungee, but it doesn't have the stretchiness you're probably used to. But there is a plastic tightener that allows you to cinch the tool to a hold down. So there you have it. A nice inexpensive set of tools, that are way better than the Versapak. Not contractor grade, but then again, you are not paying contractor prices. I just wish B&D could have supplied us with a hard plastic case instead of the cheap cardboard box they did package everything in. So long Versapak, hello VPX. Next item I'll buy is B&D hand vac. After all, I really only wanted the flashlight and a vacuum. The extra tools are just (redundant) icing on the cake. But that's another story.

Don't buy this package thinking that you are getting a heavy duty tool set, obviously. It's strengths are that the tools are lightweight, easy-to-handle, and maneuverable. I have used the driver most often and it has decent power given it's small size. None of these are hefty tools, however, and they don't give you a firm feel like better-made tools. They are quite useful for jobs that don't require much power. I bought this as a second set of tools for convenience and light-duty jobs; I have not been disappointed in it given my expectations. Good for basic around-the-house jobs.

I really like this set, and for the price (I paid fifty bucks on Amazon) you can't beat it! Only four stars because the flashlight could be brighter.

I used the saw to trim some posts on my picket fence, and the driver has come in handy numerous times. The flashlight is a pretty weak compared to my other LED flashlights, but it's not bad.

It's about what you can expect from light duty cordless power tools and at a very decent price. The battery system is pretty nifty, and a LOT more powerful that the old Flex-Charge or whatever it was that Black and Decker had several years ago for their interchangeable battery system.

I'd recommend this to my friends, for sure.

But when I was about to check out, the price had shot up to 70, in the time it took me to go get lunch. Obviously, it's no longer a good value here. Look for it at the hardware stores and big box discounters. (There's also a coupon for a free battery at vpxsystemDOTcom.) So while I recommend the product, you need to watch the amazon price very carefully.

23.) New battery technology promising.

I bought this starter set because I was curious about the new battery technology from A123, based on new, nanoscale material initially developed at MIT. I am quite amazed at the power of these batteries. The torque for this little screwdriver is good enough to handle most home oriented tasks. The cut saw handled 1 x 2 wood with ease. The light is OK -- nothing special.

My only real issue -- the design is such that you can insert the battery backward without realizing it. The batteries should be keyed in such a way that this could not happen.

These won't replace my 18v gear -- but for a lightweight set around the house it is a good buy.

This tool set has excellent power for a 7 volt system. Tools are small, light weight cousins of full size, high voltage portable tools.
If you are use to a "clutched" drill/screwdriver, the clutchless drill/driver can take you by surprise when a screw reaches it's depth, or a drill bit suddenly stops turning. Defiantly a 2 handed operation if you want save your wrists. It has very, very good power. I drove several 3-1/2" screws fully into 2 x 4's without any problem at all. The chuck is a quick release 1/4" hex.
The charger charges quickly and you can power extra chargers off the upsteam one without needing separate 120 volt outlets. These portable power tools should always be sold with 2 batteries, at a minimium. This set had one battery.
The light is handy and light weight. It should hold it's battery power for use in emergencies a long time being LiIon, like cell phone batteries.
I bought the set mainly for the cut saw. It worked well for trimming small branches on my trees.
I had the cut saw lock up on me while using it to cut sheet metal and had it sent to a B & D repair facility. I was told several weeks later that they had no repair parts to fix it, nor do they have a replacement units, since they don't build them any more. I received a generous(based on the price I paid for the kit) refund from B & D for the cut saw. I was so satisfied with the refund and the tools that I took the refund and used it to buy another 7 volt VPX starter set. I'll just use the cut saw for light duty work, like tree branches.
I do think Amazon should have indicated on the tool's description page that this is a B & D closeout tool set and that it is no longer made, or serviced under the 2 year warranty.

I'm an electrician and bought this kit for basically two reasons.
1. I wanted a small compact, easy to handle saw for small project work like making a few cuts in wood or a few cuts of electrical conduit so I wouldn't have to drag out the big reciprocating saw.
2. I wanted a secondary drill/driver with good battery life and I like the new Li-ion battery technology.
The small drill driver in the kit works great with plenty of power to drive a 2" drywall screw in solid wood on low speed and battery life seems sufficient to use consistently for a reasonable amount of time. Two speeds was a good thought from their R&D dept. A small LED work light to light the bit area would be a nice addition though.
I was much more disappointed with the hand held jigsaw. What happened to all the power I had in the driver??? It was non existent and even with a full battery charge it had to really work to make even one single cut through a piece 1/2 inch dia. conduit. (using a proper blade for metal). Not very impressive. I encountered the same thing when trying to cut a rectangular hole in 1/2 inch thick OSB board.
and the light that comes with the kit? ... pretty much worthless. Why not use several LED'S to give me a light that's actually useful and energy efficient ?
OK... I know these tools weren't designed for Pro use but I think that with a little more forethought and a small amount of money, these tools could have been much better and more useful to more people at what is still a very reasonable cost.

Would I purchase again knowing what I know now?....Not so sure about that. I'd probably wait for improvements or keep searching for a different product to fill the bill for what I wanted.
Just my 2 cents worth of input.....

The driver has plenty of punch, and is easy to use. plus the lith -ion power stores well. B & D missed the chance to hit a home run by not having a clutch -- it's too easy to stip screw heads. Also, a light would help. Switching seems stiff and cheap, but servicable.
The saw is all but useless for me. I cut just as fast in metal using a hand held hack saw (really!). Same with wood. Hand tool was faster. Way too little power, alhtough it's a handy shape and easy to change bits. This isn't a home run. It fact, it barely makes it to first base.
The light is impressive. Light weight. Seems to run forever, and throws pretty good light.
Also, they could give you the darn set free and still make money on the batteries. I've already bought two extras @ $20 each. And where is that carry case? B & D, to whom I've been a loyal customer, had half the right ideas and missed hitting the nail on the head in several key areas. Overall, I would not recommend this to others.

I'm not a power tool guy, but I bought this kit last winter when I moved into a new apartment and need to get some things done. The "power screwdriver" isn't a drill at all, but can save you some time if you're assembling something. I ended up buying the actual VPX Drill and VPX Compressor separately (the drill works fine for light duty, not real construction, the compressor is convenient for inflating tires and baby pools). The flashlight lasts a long time with the lithium cell and it will probably outlive the rest of the kit.

The cutsaw was useful for cutting some drywall and some 3/8" plywood, but it really ate up batteries. I use the past tense here because the saw has broken after I tried to cut a tree branch of about 1" in diameter with it.

Basically, this kit is good for hanging pictures, very, very light-duty cutting and for assembling baby toys where a low power screw driver is helpful. Beyond that it's just not built to last, so don't expect it to do so.

I don't usually bother to write reviews, but in this case I just concluded a series of projects around the house that showed the weakness of the VPX kit. I'm probably going to buy another kit shortly and keep the VPX around until the batteries fail. It's disappointing that B&D put a good battery in such a mediocre tool kit, no wonder it was discontinued.

Given that the kit is priced for close-out now, it's probably a decent value for $50 or less, but I still can't recommend the VPX platform.

With its versatile design and Black & Decker exclusive technology, a VPX battery is interchangeable with all the products in Black & Decker's growing VPX line. And of course, every VXP battery and compatible product features the rugged, dependable construction you expect from an industry leader in home power tools.

About this Exceptional Starter Kit
If you're interested in Black & Decker's advanced VPX product line, this is an excellent place to start. Begin your collection with this screwdriver, cut saw, flashlight, and battery -- and from there, the sky's the limit.

The screwdriver's Quick Connect chuck lets you exchange bits and tips without any hassle.

The cut saw tears through everything from stray branches, drywall, and even tougher materials like slim metal piping.

The flashlight’s integrated bungee cord fastens securely to hold the beam steady.
The Cordless VPX Screwdriver
The new VPX1101X cordless screwdriver stays stronger, longer and gets into tight spaces with ease. This compact driver is small enough to fit in the kitchen drawer, but packs plenty of power to take on projects all over the house. This handy model offers two speeds: high speed for assembly and fastening tasks, and low speed for higher torque applications such as small diameter drilling. Easy to grip and comfortably lightweight, the VPX1101X fits conveniently in your palm, and it gets into tight spaces that other power tools can’t reach. You can even use it under counter tops or behind sinks, around corners or between pieces of furniture. The VPX1101X's spindle lock helps to start and finish screws, and it lets you set the screwdriver for manual operation under tricky conditions. This screwdriver comes equipped with a Quick Connect hex-shank collar that quickly, easily accepts hex-shaped screwdriving and drilling accessories. The screwdriver is powered by a single 7-volt VPX battery.

Applications
Use the VPX1101X for any around-the-house project, from assembling furniture, hanging pictures, installing blinds and more. It's perfect for all screw-related jobs and light duty drilling applications.

The Cordless VPX Cut Saw
Zip through all kinds of cutting jobs with the new 7-volt VPX cut saw from Black & Decker. Power saws can be intimidating, bulky and noisy; and traditional handsaws can be tiring and inaccurate. Neither saw is versatile enough for everyday cutting around the home, but the VPX1301X combines power and a compact design in a lightweight cordless tool. Truly a grab-and-go item, the cut saw is ideal for quick cuts into baseboard, 1-inch pine, PVC, and more. In fact, the VPX1301X cuts almost anything, anywhere, anytime. The cut saw is powered by a single 7-volt VPX battery.

Applications
Take the VPX1301X outside to make short work of pruning, or trim your Christmas tree down to a more manageable size. Use it to cut plastic pipe under the sink or to modify the fiberboard back of your entertainment center so you can run cords out to your surround-sound speakers. This saw even cuts Closetmaid shelving to make that perfect custom fit.

The Cordless VPX Flashlight
The VPX1401 flashlight is designed to fit right in the palm of your hand, and it features three bright LED lights for plenty of illumination in any position. The flashlight’s pivoting head adjusts so you can direct the light wherever you need it most, and its integrated flat surfaces let you rest the light in three different positions. An adjustable bungee cord can be used to twist the light securely around 2-by-4 beams, pipes or tree branches; or use the belt clip to keep the flashlight close and steady while you walk. The VPX1401 is powered by a single 7-volt VPX battery.

Applications
Use the VPX1401 LED flashlight when you're working on anything that needs a little extra light to help you finish the job. The adjustable bungee cord makes the light super-versatile for auto work, duct work, plumbing, or any other kind of repair or installation that might occur in a darkened space.
