1.) About the battery comment....

Responding to the prior comment about the user not having a battery fit with his existing Makita battery:
This is because he was trying to use the white 1.5Ah Makita battery (slim pack) in a tool that requires the more powerful (and larger and more $$$$) 3.0Ah battery. SOME tools can take both, and other tools can only take the 3.0Ah battery due to their higher power requirements and are thus keyed that way.

First off, if you put this side to side with a corded super Sawzall, the Sawzall will win hands down. For what it is, the Makita is a truly amazing product.
Some quick points / comments:
Never had any problems with changing the blades and I regularly get mine full of mud using it with a long blade to cut out tree roots.
The Batteries last about 12 minutes if your using it really hard, and they get very hot and take 30-40 minutes before they are charged again, due to the additional time required to cool them. If your going to really use this saw hard on a regular basis, buy more batteries.
I used this saw with a 12" blade in it to cut down a 47 year old spruce tree when my chain saw wasn't available. It was over 15" thick. Took the saw a while, but it did it.
I've cut metal, plaster, metal lath, 4x4's, lots of conduit, lots of tree trimming / pruning, etc. It's really worked well on all of it.
One suggestion, you get what you pay for in terms of blades. I think the Bosch blades are some of the very best. Lenox blades are also very good, but tend to warp from the heat during heavy use more than the bosch blades do. The Milwaukee blades are pretty decent.
It likely won't replace your super sawzall for really heavy demo work, but for everything else, I think it is just an amazing tool.
3.) Great addition to any home toolset

First a bit about my setup and other tools.
I originally bought a Makita Drill complete with 2 small batteries and a charger.
I then bought a circular saw and realized after purchase that it requires the larger batteries.
Unlike some reviewers I did not remove the tag from the smaller battery to make it fit. Instead I bought a pair of replacement batteries. As a result I can confirm the following for those who wonder:
- the smaller batteries do not fit in the tools requiring a larger (18v) battery.
- the larger 18v battery does fit in tools that use the smaller battery.
- the charger works for all the battery types.
- it takes as long to run a battery down as it does to charge one, so have 2 batteries of each type.
Now about this tool.
Simply put, it is awesome. I have used it to:
- cut small and large tree roots in the muddy ground
- cut the plastic pot away from a thorny plant that could not easily be removed from the pot.
- cut down small trees
- prune off branches to make them fit better in the disposal bin
- hack off half of a faucet i could not remove otherwise from the sink
- hack off the grocery store's anti-theft seal from a bottle of Tequila
(if you self-checkout make sure to remember to ask the attendant to remove it before leaving the store)
- trim rolls of turf that were too wide for the section of yard I placed them in
- tear down walls
I have used several blades some named brand and some generic. All have installed and worked fine.
The only issue I have encountered is with the lock on blade guard. It was not clear which button position "lock" was. Its simple enough to check manually tho.
4.) All around great sawzall

Easy review here. A great product. To me, it's THE classic sawzall. It's the right size, GREAT (light but solid) weight, great power, and has that torque that it might start bogging down, but keeps grinding away and then powers through. I really like the balance with the battery and the SKY HOOK is awesome. The light is excellent and enables you to use the saw (with a bit of faith/skill) in total darkness and saves a bunch of time not having to lug a light around and aim it. Also, I like the blade holder.
My carpenter friend used to like some discontinued old DeWalt classic saw (late 90's I guess), and was critical of my MONSTER JR3070CT. However, when he used this one, he said it's the closest thing he's ever found, but he has accepted the need for the BEAST at times to save effort. He will also tell you (as will anyone else) that the cordless configuration and that fantastic LED light set it apart from 100% of other saws 12 amps or less. Besides, the number and quality of other LXT tools makes this the only one to have. $64, are you kidding me?!?!? I'm almost jealous, and I have it! (came in a set) If you already have the drill, BUY THIS it's worth 2x that amount easy. Buy Makita stock MKTAY too because to me they're really dominating the power tool industry, making a great name for themselves, and getting a lot of 100% loyal customers like me by making my job easy and enjoyable. I'll be the first to criticize when they mess something up and really try to get them to change it, but it hasn't even come close to happening.
5.) Great saw for the weight and price
Reviewed by: Mechanical Engineer Cleveland, Oh

I've used this saw for cutting old construction lumber, tree branches, plastic pipe, and metal. It works like a champ. Surprising amount of power for a cordless.
One of the other reviewers noted that the blade falls out after a while. I asked a Makita rep about this and he said that sawdust can get into the blade opening (sawing overhead) and this prevents the blade from going in all the way (even though it seems secure). I have noticed this, but blowing it out with compressed air makes it as good as new. The blade mounting style is superior to my Milwaukee sawzall. On the Makita you rotate the blade lock 45 degrees and it clicks open and stays there. Then you insert the blade with one hand and it automatically rotates back to lock the blade in - so much nicer.
Yes, it uses all the standard blades.
Well worth the price.

7.) Excellent saw, easy blade loading, amazing batteries

This is a compact recip saw that keeps up with its corded bigger brothers. Its size makes it easy to maneuver in tighter spaces without sacrificing raw cutting power. Not to mention you can take it out in the middle of nowhere or into hard to reach areas such as an attic or crawlspace where there's no power and not have to worry about getting an extension cord tangled up or coming unplugged. Very easy to load blades as they lock securely once you push them into place. Removing them is just as easy by turning the blade holder a quarter turn. But the best thing about this saw is the batteries. They provide tremendous, long lasting power and charge back up in just about a half hour! I've had the batteries last as long as 2-3 days on a drill/driver with fairly constant use. Any other cordless would have died in the middle of the first day and required me to have a handful of batteries pre-charged to continue working. That means more money spent and more heavy crap to lug around and take up space. I only have one battery per tool of this Makita line, and generally only use two (max three) at a time so I always have one (yes, just one) precharged and ready for replacements. The dead battery can be back to work fully charged in half an hour (if I need it)! I have an inverter in the car and if needed I can recharge one or two batteries on the way to the next job!

I haven't use this product all that much yet (I just assume, being Makita, it'll be great). I shaved off a little "nubby" inside the tool and the batteries fit fine.

First off I had to break off a little tab where the battery slides in so it would accept the smaller Lithium Ion batteries from my drill/impact combo set. I specifically bought this saw to cut exhaust pipe with. The quick change blade feature DOES NOT hold the blade very well on my saw at all. It may just be mine that is faulty?? I don't know.
I highly recommend the larger higher milli-amp rated batteries to use with this saw. The smaller ones just don't last very long with continued use at all.
I hope this helps someone.......

I've owned many cordless reciprocating saws over the years and this would definitely be at the top of the list if it weren't for the fact that after using it for a short time the blades fall out while sawing! At first I thought I just didn't have them locked in properly, but I tried again several times, each time making sure it was completely locked in and it keeps falling out!!! This is exremely frustrating. Apparently I'm not the only one who's had this problem. I've tried different blades, but it just won't hold them. Otherwise it seems great! Good size, not too heavy, work light and plenty of power. I'm going to try to contact Makita to see if they have any suggestions.

I have owned Makita products for years. I would like to say several, but due to the fact they last so long you do not need several. One last for years. I still have an ald 7.4v drill that still works, though the batteries are weak. What do you expect for a 8 year old drill. It really bums me out to have to give this saw only one star, and that is only because it is a Makita. Battery is great, light weight, durable, but will not hold a blade for squat. After it first use the blade kept spitting out. I returned it to a Makita sevice center. This is a nother reason for only one star. After 3 months, I finally got it back. No difference. It still will not hold a blade. I am completely disapointed with the quick change blade holder. My saw came with the kit. If you are looking for a kit, get one without this saw and then go buy a different brand reciprocating saw, perhaps Hitachi. Until Makita gets a clue and fixes this flaw and perhaps do a better turnaround in the service depatment area I will have to look elsewhere for a reciprocating saw that will hold a blade. But I will still buy their drills, impacts, and circular saws.
